Male Breast Reduction
Gynecomastia is the female appearance of the male breast. The condition is characterized by the enlargement of the breast and can be either one sided (unilateral) or both sides (bilateral). Some patients present with breast pain, a breast mass or increase in breast size. There are different degrees of gynecomastia ranging from a mass located behind the areola to the enlargement of the entire breast.
Several factors have been linked to cause gynecomastia. These factors include hormonal imbalances, genetics, obesity, certain medication use and marijuana use. This condition can cause emotional turmoil and decrease a patient’s self-esteem. The severity of the gynecomastia will dictate the extent of the surgical procedure, termed a mastectomy, that needs to be performed to correct the deformity.
Dr. Silverman considers you a candidate for a mastectomy for gynecomastia if:
- An investigation of the cause for gynecomastia has been performed
- You suffer from breast pain
- You feel your breasts are too large or appear feminine
- You are self-conscious because of the size of breasts
- You are of relatively normal weight
- You are a healthy patient
- You have realistic goals
