Gynecomastia is the female appearance of the male breast. The condition is characterized by the enlargement of the breast and can be either one sided (unilateral) or both sides (bilateral). Some patients present with breast pain, a breast mass or increase in breast size. There are different degrees of gynecomastia ranging from a mass located behind the areola to the enlargement of the entire breast. Several factors have been linked to cause gynecomastia. These factors include hormonal imbalances, genetics, obesity, certain medication use and marijuana use. This condition can cause emotional turmoil and decrease a patient’s self-esteem. The severity of the gynecomastia will dictate the extent of the surgical procedure, termed a mastectomy, that needs to be performed to correct the deformity.
