Eyelash Extensions are made of synthetic strands of either silk or mink and can also be made of real silk or mink. They are a great way to enhance or glam up the natural lashes a patient already has. If there is a natural lash, an extension can be applied. And, the biggest perk about having them done is NO MASCARA!! This helps big time when we get ready in the morning shaving off minutes!! Who doesn’t want a “get up and go” service done to help the ease of our morning routine?
What kinds of Lash Extensions are there?
There are many types of curls to the extensions that can be used. From basically no curl (A or J curl) to very curly (D curl), we can enhance the eyes shape and overall look. Aside from the type of curl there are other things to consider when choosing extensions. We offer classic, hybrid and volume sets.
Classic lash extensions are a ratio of 1:1, in other words one lash extension gets applied to one natural lash. This is the most natural looking.
Hybrid lash extensions are classic application blended in with fans, which are anywhere from 2-8 lashes per fan. This application builds volume and texture. Lashes on these fans are a lot thinner than a single classic lash since there are more lashes on the fan. Wispy looks can be achieved this way and are most popular amongst our patients.
Volume lash extensions are only fan application to the natural lashes. This look is favored usually by a patient that wants more of a strip lash look and can be very big in volume and fluffy looking.
Are Lash Extensions safe?
Lash extensions are very safe if they are applied in the correct manor. For instance, the average person has 90-120 natural lashes per eye. Each eye can shed between 1-5 lashes per day. If this is the case, then in one week 21 lashes can be shed, in 2 weeks 42 lashes can be shed, and in 3 weeks 63 lashes can be shed. Lash extensions are applied only to the natural lash 1-2mm from the lash line, so when a natural lash sheds so does the extension that is applied to it; safely and naturally.
What is the process of Lash Extension application?
First, a lash primer is used to clean & disinfect the real lashes. It will remove any dirt, oil & make-up on the natural lashes which prevent the extensions from adhering to the real lashes. Second, under eye pads are used to hold down the lower lashes which are 100% natural plant extract eye pads that also moisturize and tighten your skin with no irritation to eyes. The under eye pads are used during the eyelash extension process are not only for client comfort but help stimulate the skin’s collagen to brighten the skin under the eye during the eyelash extension treatment. Third, a clear tape is placed on top of the under eye pad closer to the water line to closely hold down the lower lashes so they do not get in the way of applying extensions to the correct upper lashes. Eyes remain closed during the whole procedure. Using a unique to lash extension tweezer in each hand, the lash technician will isolate one lash and apply an extension.
How long does it take to apply a Full Set and a Fill?
A full set should take roughly 2 hours from start to finish. Remember how many natural lashes one has on each eye (90-120) and that the Technician is trying to apply an extension to each of them. Fills are recommended 2-3 weeks after the initial set and from fill-to-fill and take 1 – 1.5 hours to complete. At New Beginnings we offer varied pricing for classic and hybrid/volume fills and also if they are done at 2 or 3 weeks. At a fill, many of the extensions that were put on previously will remain on unless they are really grown out and no longer glued on fully. Some factors that affect lash loss include hormones, medications, stress, eye conditions, skin conditions, allergies, etc., in which case a fills would have to be done closer together.
What is the Aftercare for Lash Extensions?
-No mascara/no waterproof mascara
-No oil based products around the eye area
-No water can come in contact with the eye area for 24 hours after the application
-No tinting or perming of eyelash extensions
-No pulling or rubbing of the eyelash extensions
-Should any kind of eye drops be necessary, extra care should be taken to prevent moisture from coming into contact with the eyelash extensions
-Sleep on your back
-Wash lashes in the AM with a simple cleanser, Johnson & Johnson baby soap, or lash foam and follow with brushing them and lastly using a lash sealant
-Wash lashes in the PM only if makeup was worn
-Get a lash fill every 2-3 weeks
-Keep the lash line clean: being from oils, makeup, eyeshadow dustings, crust, and fuzz from clothing, etc. A dirty lash line will harvest bacteria and lashes will not hold on as well.
Before Coming to your Lash Appointment…
-Shower before your lash appointment (lashes cannot get wet for 24 hours after the service)
-Come with clean lashes and face (no makeup on or around the eyes, this way the Technician can have more time to lash fill and not use that time cleaning dirty lashes)
-Arrange a babysitter (having children present is a big distraction to the patient and Technician especially since the parent won’t be able to open their eyes for the whole service)
-Do not drink coffee or caffeinated beverages 30min-1 hour before the service (this prevents jittery and fluttery eyes – remember the Technician has really sharp tweezers millimeters from your eyes and we do not want any injuries)
What is Lash Sealant?
Lash Sealant is one of the most effective tools for prolonging your eyelash extension life. It will protect the adhesive from moisture, humidity, and oils, preventing your lashes from failing prematurely. The patient should apply the sealant once the glue has completely dried to increase their retention time. For best results it is recommended that the patient apply every day or every other day after cleansing the lashes for extra protection and longer lash life. Sealant will hold the lashes in place and provide protection from the environment. New Beginnings sells lash sealant for the patient’s convenience.
What is Lash Retention?
Lash retention is something all lash artists and patients want. Retention is how long the lash extensions are staying on strong week after week. At each fill extensions that were once put on 2 weeks prior, for example, will now be grown out many millimeters. The gap now is very visible from the lash line to where the extension starts. The Lash Technician will remove any older and grown out lash extensions and will replace them with new ones now closer to lash line again. As older lash extensions grown out the weight of them will now be further from the lash line causing them to shift slightly and turn downward. Old extensions should be removed so there is no discomfort, itching and even preventing them from turning to the point where they poke inside the eye.
